BBC Big Read

The BBC Big Read

Would you like to join me in a reading challenge?

Back in April 2003 the BBC launched a search for the nation’s best loved book, asking the UK to nominate its favourite novel. After a flurry of voting the nation's Top 200 books were announced. There then followed a series of programmes between October and December where the Nation's Top 21 books were then championed by a host of celebrities with a programme dedicated to each title. Web, SMS, Phone and Interactive voting ended on December 11th and in the final programme on December 13th, Britain’s best loved book turned out to be…..drum roll…….Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

At last count I had managed to read 73 books on the list, but figured as it is so long since I read them that it might be fun to do it again. And so, I am undertaking to re-read the books on the list, and who knows maybe finish reading all of them. As I go I will publish reviews as I have read them. There is no time limit on this, I still want to read lots of other books. So if you fancy joining me in this reading challenge I would love to hear from you and hear how you are going on!

I would absolutely love it if the BBC did this again. There has been so much amazing writing that has been published since and I think that the list would look very different now.
