I first discovered the books of Emily Barr when I was a bookseller. They were sold by our very cheerful Hodder book rep called Phil. Emily's first novel Backpack was published 5 years after The Beach and it sums up the backpacker lifestyle, which was becoming popular in the late 1990s. Emily Barr's novels have wonderful location but there is always a slightly dark side to her novels. I love them!
